The A, B, C’s of Style

What’s up, it’s me—the new fashion Queen on the scene (or on JUX), looking for cute shit, artsy shit, fashion shit weird, shit and highhhhhhh fashion shit. Since this is my first write up, it’s only appropriate to start with the basics—ABCs. The Fashun *fancy accent* ABCs, the OGs to the game, leaders of the pack, the ones that invented edges just so they can be snatched… that unintentionally rhymed, but I’m smooth like that.

FROM setting cars on fire to being the Queen of Wakanda, Angela Bassett has captivated us on the movie screen. Now she has brought her breath taking aura to the red carpet. Bassett has been spotted wearing looks from all ends the fashion spectrum from printed and poised to fun fringe. She masterfully ‘slays’ every look put forth. Most recently Bassett took our breath away while wearing a crisp white Azzi & Osta gown with architectural detail at the 2018 Emmy’s. For 2019, it’s safe to say that she’s coming full force with fashion.

UNDEFEATED as always, Beyoncé is going Apeshit on the charts as well as the fashion scene. With her elite basic tease and eloquent ensembles, she never disappoints. Not to mention Beyoncé’s royal concert attire on the stage of Coachella 2018. Re-named ‘Beychella’ not only for her performance but for the experience emphasized by the Olivier Rousteing designed looks. With 2018 being this amazing for Queen B, 2019 will be full of surprises.

AS two thirds of what I like to call the new kids on the block (Yara Shahidi missing), Chloe x Halle have definitely made their presence know. With eclectic patterns and colors in tow, the Beyoncé protégées have managed to concoct the perfect style recipe, composed of eloquence, sex appeal & street. Not to mention their beautiful tresses are always styled to perfection officially making them #SisterGoals.

BLACK muva of the Earth, Erykah Badu gives us drama, whether it’s her controversial views on Hitler or her over the top attire. Best known for her killer head pieces, Badu has cultivated a genre of style that is completely her own. With an ‘I don’t care who’s watching’ attitude Badu is an enigma of shapes, colors & lines. Her look at the 2017 Soul Train Awards, a fluffy white coat embellished in gold detail with geometric headwear (Thom Browne), gives me afrocentric chic x auntie vibes. A being directly plucked from the Earth, clothed in an effortlessly ‘cool’ demeanor, Badu is an unpredictable cliff hanger which is just what the industry needs.

EVEN though fans have long awaited her new album (set to release in 2019) Rihanna has been more steadfast on dominating the fashion industry. Regardless of controversy surrounding her size, Rihanna always goes for the jugular when it comes to red carpets appearances & everyday life. Her last edge snatching moment being her appearance at the 2018 Met Gala. She beautifully executed a bejeweled strapless mini dress with a matching collared robe by Maison Margiela, Rihanna has easily become a fashion icon. With talks of her teaming up with LVMH to start a high-end fashion brand, there’s nothing much to say but, Robyn you’re doing amazing sweetie!

LIKE high blood pressure, Solange is the silent killer of fashion. What was once a shy caterpillar has now become a sensational butterfly; stepping out in looks from contemporary to avante garde. Solange is turning the tides, stunting in looks like her cream floor length wedding gown (with matching cape) and sculpted black Iris van Herpen dress, giving me “devout queen of the predator” vibes. Even though Solange may be a diamond in the rough, her looks for this year have been a TKO.

AS wonderful as her hair may be, her sense of style is just as amazing. One half of the dynamic Quann Twin duo, electrifies in RTW (Ready To Wear) and looks dappered with a smidge of designer. An obvious creative, TK eloquently walks the line between costume and chic; sporting lace cat ears, extreme creepers and a multitude of blazing colors. Joining Urban Bush Babes in 2013, a blog founded by her sister Cipriana Quann & Nikisha Brunson, TK serves as Executive Contributor. There is no slaycation for this pattern mixing, texture touting, lyrisologist as she is the poster child for diversity, body positivity & inclusivity in the fashion industry.

ROUNDING off the new kids on the block Yara Shahidi, best known for her activism & break out role on Black-ish, is redefining ‘basic’. Yara has a demur simplicity about her, that translates beautifully when pulling off looks like the pale pink huate coutre gown (Fendi) she sported at the 2019 SAG Awards. Presence is a major key for her, stating “the only rule I have about clothes is that I feel as though it makes me present and seen when I’m in it”. Wavering between teen getups & adult attire Yara uses small details to grab the stop light & vanquish the show.

This run down is only a few of the major hitters in style. Honorable mentions include Cardi B, Keyshia Ka'Oir, and Lady Gaga just to name a few. Hopefully these ladies have inspired you to change up your look and have a ‘who’s she?’ moment. But until next time!
