If you’re anything like me

As a child, the darkness held all the monsters,

All the ghosts

And the nightlight was only thing that could rid my room

Claimed me safe as my mind drifted into home base

My monsters always surrendered to the light

so fast forward,

My nightlight has taken refuge in my belly

Swallowed whole,

Able to stomach and release demons that catapulted off neighbors tongue to make broken home out of my self-esteem

so fast forward,

My light doesn’t shine as bright, but it still belongs to my belly

But the monsters make home in my mind instead

They don’t sleep much

Don’t know rest

But their screams so loud it drives itself to the edge

With not even a little boat to save the body its left

I never know whether to console them or clean up the mess
